Welcome to the Better Business Bureau of Newfoundland and Labrador
website. One of the main objectives of the BBB is to provide
consumers with information on the fair business practices of companies
in the marketplace. This type of information is an invaluable resource that
can significantly reduce your risk of disappointment with your buying decisions.
More and more consumers are accessing BBB services, and the internet
continues to be an important point of access. In 2005, we issued nearly
13 000 company reports, and saw an increase of approximately 44% in the
usage of BBB services overall, from the previous year. Consumers are
listening to our long-standing advice…check with us before you spend
your hard earned dollars.
Our
success is owed to the strength of our membership, many of whom have
supported our important work since we were established in this province
in 1967. In 2006 we expect to see our
membership continue to grow as more people realize the value of the
vital services we provide. The BBB of Newfoundland & Labrador is an independent, self governing,
not-for-profit organization that is funded almost entirely through the
support of our membership. We are one of the few organizations that
require members to meet and maintain standards - so remember to
always ask a business "Are you a member of the BBB?", and then be
sure to contact our office to verify this information.
Local businesses that meet
our strict membership standards support the BBB because they know that
an ethical marketplace is in everyone’s best interest. They know we
will act as a neutral third party, giving them an opportunity to learn
of and respond to customer issues. We encourage all qualified
businesses to support this cause and join the BBB today.
The
staff of the BBB is very knowledgeable in many of the scams, schemes and
frauds that perpetrate our marketplace on a daily basis. If you or
someone you know believes they are victims of a scam, we can help. We
work with police and other like minded agencies to prevent fraud, and to
do everything possible to shut it down. This website provides
information on a range of different scams and tips on what you can do to
avoid getting scammed. Remember, if it sounds to good to be true than
it probably is.
